A Dream Doesn’t Become Reality Overnight
Ladybug Design launched in 2000, originally as a corporate design firm — hence the name. Samantha Nolan leveraged her corporate director of marketing experience, and her master’s degree in marketing and communication, to launch the business. Acquiring major clients in the Central Ohio market, she started to build an impressive portfolio while continuing her marketing career.
The Dream Has Come True
When Life Gives You Lemons…
In 2002, life took a turn when Samantha lost her job and found herself several months pregnant and conducting a job search. After redeveloping her brand and creating what she felt was a fantastic resume and portfolio, Samantha launched her job search at 6 months pregnant! After submitting 5 resumes in the first week of her search, she had secured a 100% response rate and had 5 interviews planned over the course of the next 2 weeks. Feeling a renewed sense of professional confidence about her potential success and reentry onto her “planned” journey, her daughter decided she was ready to see the world and on a warm late-July Sunday afternoon Samantha’s little 5-pound baby girl was born! Needless to say Samantha never went on those interviews, in fact her friend had to call and cancel them for her! Reevaluating her “planned” journey, Samantha next decided to transition her expertise in corporate branding and communications into personal branding, leveraging what she already knew to support others who also found themselves taking an often-unplanned turn on their professional road.
Dedication, Determination, Time & Hard Work
First practicing the craft of résumé writing while working with a large dot com under the guidance of a managing director, she felt confident going solo after assisting with about a thousand résumés.
Receiving a call one day from her local newspaper — The Columbus Dispatch — asking her to present on the subject of résumé writing at its job fair, Samantha’s journey took another unexpected turn. After presenting at three job fairs in 2004, and feeling like “Dear Abby” answering similar questions over and over again, the idea for a résumé writing and job search column was born.
“Dear Sam” launched in December 2004 as a Q&A style column, answering job seekers’ most pressing questions on résumé development, interviewing, networking and job searching. Since that time, the column has enjoyed syndication through other major outlets and is now read by more than two million readers each week.
